The Oscars May Add a New Rule

Rumor has it that the Academy Awards may be implementing a new rule that will add a new hurdle for Netflix, HBO and other streaming services.

According to Matthew Belloni of Puck News, the Academy is thinking of implementing a requirement that all films nominated for Best Picture must have a theatrical distribution in “15 or 20 of the top 50 markets” in the United States. This comes after the Netflix Film ‘All Quiet On The Western Front’ made its way through the 95th Academy Awards with 4 wins, including International Feature. It also beat out films such as ‘Elvis’ and ‘Babylon’ for production design, score, and cinematography.

The plan will still need approval before going into effect.
