(New York, NY) – The New York Yankees are winners on Major League Baseball’s Opening Day. Gerrit Cole got the win, striking out 11 batters and pitching six innings. Newly named Yankees Captain Aaron Judge hit a solo homer in his first at bat, and drove home a run later with a broken bat single.

Rookie shortstop Anthony Volpe became the Yankees youngest Opening Day starter at shortstop since Derek Jeter in 1996. He walked and stole a base. Fellow infielder Gleyber Torres, playing DH, hit a 2-run homer. DJ LeMahieu also drove in a run.

It was a brisk but sunny day in the Bronx, with the Bombers sending the Yankees’ faithful home happy. This marks the Yankees first Opening Day shutout since 1988.
