(New York, NY) — Civil rights leaders held a rally in Harlem on Wednesday, calling on state lawmakers to give judges more discretion when it comes to putting repeat offenders behind bars. NAACP President Hazel Dukes, and Eric Garner’s mother, Gwen Carr, took part in the rally. They say leaders in Albany have the power to make their communities safer, by giving the power back to judges to sentence criminals to long jail sentences instead of letting them walk the streets.
