(New York, NY) – Jane Ferguson, a native of the United Kingdom who lives and works in New York City, was recently assaulted by a complete stranger while riding the subway. But the “PBS NewsHour” reporter came out of the experience saying, “New Yorkers are pretty great.”

The incident happened on Monday in Manhattan, while Ferguson was riding the 4 train. It was during the evening rush, around 6:30 PM. The suspect randomly struck her with a closed fist on the side of the face. Kneeling down to the floor in shock, Ferguson explains on Twitter her ear was ringing, and her face felt like it was “on fire.”

At that moment, a woman put her arm around Ferguson’s shoulder and helped lead her off the car at the next station. The woman, who is named Samantha, brought the injured reporter to cops and made sure she was ok.

Ferguson only got the woman’s first name, and expressed her gratitude with the social media posts, hoping it would get back to the Good Samaritan.

In recent weeks, New York City officials have reported that crime is down in the subway. Elected officials and straphangers are sharing their thoughts.
