Pioneering Saxophonist Wayne Shorter, an NJ Native, Dead at 89

(New York, NY) – Eleven-time Grammy award winner and New Jersey native Wayne Shorter is dead at the age of 89. The jazz saxophonist was considered an innovator and pioneer. He debuted in 1959 and eventually played with the Miles Davis Quintet as well as Art Blaklely’s Jazz Messengers.

Shorter released more than two dozen albums and co-founded the jazz fusion band Weather Report. In 2015 he was honored with a lifetime achievement award, and he was among the awardees at the 2018 Kennedy Center Honors. Tributes have been coming in on social media from people in the music industry, as well as fans, acknowledging Shorter’s prowess.
