(New York, NY) – It’s been a rough past couple of weeks for New York City’s avian population. First, a King pigeon was captured and sent for treatment after it was deliberately dyed pink. Animal rescuers say the bird is struggling to keep food down as the dye’s harsh fumes hinder the animal’s breathing.
Now, an owl that escaped from the Central Park Zoo is drawing concern. Residents have seen Flaco the Eurasian eagle owl flying above Fifth Avenue and in Central Park. He broke free on Thursday. Animal experts say the bird was bred in captivity and can’t live on its own in the wild. Park rangers have left food out for Flaco, but he refuses to eat – and attempts to coax him down from the trees have been unsuccessful.
