Report: NYC Paying to Bus Migrants To Canada

(New York, NY) – According to a published report, migrants are abandoning the Big Apple for the Land of the Maple Leaf. While the nation’s southern border continues to be inundated with asylum seekers, the resulting migrant crisis is playing out in real time in New York City. But a city sponsored trip up north appears to be part of Mayor Eric Adams’ plan to lessen the burden, all while he implores the state and federal government for financial support.

The ongoing situation notably led to a recent standoff between city officials and a group of migrants in Hell’s Kitchen. Mayor Adams’ plan to relocate single male migrants to a shelter at the Brooklyn Cruise Terminal hit a temporary snag last week, when those individuals refused and pitched tents along 57th Street. After city officials cleared the tents and relocated the single men, the mayor spent a night this past weekend at the cruise terminal, in a show of solidarity.

As to why the migrant group originally refused transfer to Brooklyn, advocates had said the shelter was too cold, and lacked adequate bathroom facilities. Given temperatures gradually warmed this weekend, those concerns may have abated – especially considering where an increasing number of migrants are headed instead. Per the New York Post, National Guard soldiers have been distributing bus tickets to migrants at Port Authority Bus Terminal. The immediate destination is Upstate New York towns like Plattsburgh – located around 20 miles south of the Canadian border. From there, and in concert with groups like Catholic Charities, the migrants are ushered over the border and into Canada.

The post’s report says taxi drivers also hang around the gas station where the buses drop people off, in hopes of ferrying them over the border for $70 bucks. Otherwise, shuttle buses pick up families for $90, and single migrants for between $40 and $50. This is all in line with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s vow to maintain his nation’s “proud and longstanding tradition of welcoming people seeking safety.” Some of the migrants interviewed in the Post article say they were surprised by the number of homeless and flagrant drug users in New York, adding they feel Canada offers their families a better opportunity.
