SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — A San Francisco police investigator has testified that the man accused of attacking House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s husband said there was “evil in Washington” and he was targeting her because she is second in line to the presidency.

Authorities say David DePape broke into the Pelosis’ San Francisco home on Oct. 28, seeking to kidnap the speaker. She was not home, and authorities say DePape instead beat her husband, Paul Pelosi, with a hammer.

DePape appeared in state court Wednesday for a preliminary hearing, and the judge ruled a trial can move forward. DePape has pleaded not guilty to federal and state charges and remains held without bail.

His public defender declined to comment Wednesday.
