FILE: Riker's Island
NEW YORK (77WABC) — A judge doesn’t believe Riker’s Island should be turned over to Federal control, ruling that the city should continue to work at rehabilitating the jail.
Corrections Commissioner Louis Molina told the judge at a hearing late Thursday that there are problems at Riker’s — but asked for more time to get the jail under control. The Legal Aid Society making the request to take control of Riker’s Island away from the city.
Meantime, the judge making it clear that the city will be held accountable in its effort to turn things around at Riker’s. New York City Mayor Eric Adams has opposed a federal take over of Riker’s Island.
