NEW JERSEY (77WABC) — More toll hikes may be implemented for drivers in New Jersey in 2023.

The planned hikes follow back-to-back toll increases on the New Jersey turnpike and Garden State Parkway since September 2020. Under the New Jersey Turnpike authority’s $2.5 billion dollar budget which alone is up 7.4% — a 3% toll increase is planned starting Jan. 1.

Officials blamed the increase on costs due to an inflationary rate of 8.3%, a level not seen in 40 years. Based on the 2022 increase, parkway tolls would increase from the current $1.96 for E-ZPass customers to $2.02 and from $2 to $2.10 for cash at toll plazas with one-way tolling.

Turnpike authority commissioners approved the budget by a 5-0 vote, with no discussion or questions asked Tuesday morning.
