NYC Pushes Polio Vaccine As Traces Turn Up In Sewage

NEW YORK (77WABC) — As traces of polio emerge in New York City’s sewage samples, New York City Health Commissioner Dr. Ashwin Vasan is urging people to get vaccinated.

Virus samples from Brooklyn and Queens collected earlier this year were genetically traced to New York’s only known polio case discovered in Rockland County. Vasan says wastewater surveillance doesn’t reveal where it’s coming from, but vaccination numbers are telling officials who’s at risk of contracting it.

“While only one case of polio has so far been identified in New York state, ongoing wastewater surveillance testing provides evidence of repeated polio virus detections in sewage samples in New York City,” Vasan said at a press briefing. “While the information is new, the advice is old. Get vaccinated.”

He adds citywide, childhood polio vaccination rates are starting to tick upwards, noting all children must be vaccinated in private and public schools across New York State.
