NEW YORK (77WABC) — Governor Kathy Hochul is ready to send in the National Guard to help run a tent city for migrants – which has been shifted from Orchard Beach to Randall’s Island.
The New York Post is reporting a unit of 100 reservists has been mobilized for deployment and the soldiers “are ready to assist” Mayors Eric Adams. A spokesperson for the governor says the National Guard will provide logistical and operational support to the city’s relief center once it is ready to open.
A source close to the National Guard says the reservists recruited for the assignment were selected in part based on their ability to speak Spanish.
One local community leader in the Bronx say the migrants should be moved out of the city.
