NEW JERSEY (77WABC) — Newark Mayor Ras Baraka is angry about New Jersey’s health insurance rate increases for public workers and retirees.

Some local governments will now see an estimated 23% health insurance rate increase, while state workers can expect about a 21% increase, following a vote by the State Health Benefits Commission. Baraka called the plan a betrayal for thousands of hard-working municipal employees at a time when insurance companies are making record profits.

The mayor says he will work nonstop to protect workers from the increase. He said the city had neither say nor control in this process, which impacts 800 workers.
