NEW YORK (77WABC) – Rikers Island Correction officers have been quitting their jobs in unusually high numbers to take better paying positions at detention centers across the South.

According to ABC 7, some Rikers officers say they have been asked to guard large numbers of inmates in dangerous cell blocks over 16 hour days. Prison systems in places like Virginia, and South Carolina have been actively recruiting officers from New York.

Some incentives that have been luring them are reportedly higher wages and better working conditions.
