NY: Ridin’ the subway in New York
NEW YORK (77WABC) — Fears are persisting among riders in the NYC transit system.
According to police statistics, for June, crime is up 31% year over year. Despite ridership being at 60% of pre-pandemic levels back in June, NYC Mayor Eric Adams in June said the subway still could bounce back.
30 people interviewed in an article by The New York Times said despite fears of crime subways remain the safest and most cost effective means of transportation. NYPD stats for June find shootings are down from 165 to 125 , a 12% year over year decline.
Gun arrests are up 4%, murders are down 10% but other crimes are up including robberies, felony assaults, burglaries, grand larcenies, rapes and hate crimes are up.
