Hochul Says She Won’t Review Changes To Bail Reform Until January

NEW YORK (77WABC) — Governor Kathy Hochul on Thursday said she would not discuss changes to state bail laws until January at the earliest — just a day after she blamed judges for rising crime in New York City.

This comes despite ongoing calls for action from Mayor Eric Adams as well as from small business owners and her Republican challenger Congressman Lee Zeldin amid rampant crime. That timeline leaves current laws in place ahead of the November 8 election pitting Hochul against Zeldin, who has made reforming the state’s criminal justice system a major platform of his candidacy.

Hochul also urged critics to remain patient following the enactment of slight bail law tweaks that she has previously said hit the “sweet spot,” and which were included in the state budget passed last April. The situation has even Adams calling for a legislative session in the state, however Hochul has rebuffed those calls for action.
