With the trade deadline approaching here are some of the players the Mets should target. Josh Bell of the Washington Nationals is batting .304, with 12 Home Runs and 47 RBIs on the year. With the Nationals being sellers at the deadline there is a good chance that they will trade Bell. Bell is a switch hitter that does well against left-handed pitching and could help the Mets lineup out a lot. Another potential Mets target could be Willson Contreras of the Chicago Cubs. The Cubs catcher is batting .266 with 13 Home runs, 35 RBIs, and an OBP of .384. Contreras has been very consistent for Chicago and could give New York a big boost offensively. Contreras could potentially DH for the Mets with Nido staying behind the plate. Another reason this could be a good option for the Mets is that James McCann just got an oblique injury which will keep him out for some time.
In addition to the Mets needing a big bat in their lineup, New York also needs some bullpen help as well. Some relievers that could be of interest to the Mets are David Robertson of the Chicago Cubs, David Bednar of the Pittsburgh Pirates, and Gregory Soto of the Detroit Tigers. In 31 games pitched this year Robertson has a 2.10 ERA and 12 saves for Chicago who will most likely trade him before the August 2nd deadline. Lone All-Star for the Pittsburgh Pirates David Bednar has been great for them. Bednar has a 2.63 ERA and 15 saves in 18 opportunities for Pittsburgh. Another route the Mets could go is with lefty reliever Gregory Soto. Soto has 17 saves and a 2.67 ERA for Detroit so far this year and could give the Mets another lefty which is what they desperately need. The only other lefty New York has is Joely Rodriguez who they acquired from the Yankees this past off-season. None of these relievers would close games for the Mets with Edwin Diaz doing an incredible job at the back end of the bullpen but I believe that the relievers I mentioned could help the Mets a lot. We’ll see what the Mets do as the trade deadline approaches but I believe that they will be very active.
