Harlem, NY(77WABC) – A Hamilton Heights grocery store worker is charged with murder and criminal possession of a weapon after allegedly stabbing a man to death during a fight over a bag of chips.
Police say a woman with a child was unable to pay for a bag of chips and left the store at 3422 Broadway at approximately 11:07 pm on Friday July 1st. A man then entered the store arguing with a grocery worker, 51-year-old Jose Alba, over the bag of chips.
Alba allegedly took a large knife from a shelf and stabbed 37 year old Austin Simon during the confrontation. Police say EMS transported Simon of New York, NY to Harlem Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Officers from the 30th precinct arrested Alba. Police say he is charged with murder and criminal possession of a weapon.
Police say they obtained surveillance video from the store which shows the alleged fight.
As of Tuesday, Alba, of West 141st St. in Manhattan, was held at Riker’s Island Jail in lieu of $250,000 bail. He is scheduled to appear in Manhattan Criminal Court on Thursday.
