New York, NY (77WABC)- Former NYC Mayor Rudy Giuliani was out campaigning for his son Andrew Giuliani on Sunday at the Shop Rite on Veterans Road in Charleston, when when police say a store employee attacked him from behind around 3:30 p.m.
The employee was taken into custody. Police sources said the 78-year-old Giuliani refused medical attention after the slap to the back.
Giuliani’s son, Andrew,  is currently seeking the Republican nomination for governor of New York in Tuesdays primaries. Here is the younger Giuliani’s reaction to the incident:
Here is my statement on today’s assault on my Father, @RudyGiuliani :
Innocent people are attacked in today's New York all of the time. This particular incident hit very close to home. The assault on my father, America's Mayor, was over politics. (1/2)— Andrew H. Giuliani (@AndrewHGiuliani) June 27, 2022
Giuliani called into the Curtis Sliwa Show on 77WABC on Sunday and talked about the incident:
The elder Giuliani, a former federal prosecutor , told the NY Post he felt it was his duty to call police and report the incident.
The suspect, a 39-year-old store employee was expected to be charged with second degree assault involving a person over the age of 65 according to law enforcement.
The circumstances that preceded the slap were not immediately clear.
