NEW YORK,  NEW YORK -(  77WABC)- An NYPD detective was grazed in the arm by a bullet late Thursday afternoon in Brownsville, Brooklyn.

It happened about 4:30 pm near the intersection of Pitkin avenue and Legion street.

The detective and an officer from the 73rd precinct were on patrol in a marked vehicle when a man suddenly appeared from a building and began firing at a passing vehicle.

One of the bullets shattered the window of the patrol car–striking the detective.

Both the detective and the officer jumped out the vehicle chasing the suspect.   Detective Sunjay Verma was treated at Kings County Hospital.

A handgun was recovered at the scene.
