NEW YORK(77WABC) — AAA says New York State has surpassed the $5.00 mark for average price of gas as of Thursday — the highest ever average price on record.

According to AAA, the national average sits just under $4.99. In Syracuse and Albany, the average price per gallon is $4.95.

AAA says that the highest prices in upstate New York are in the North Country. St. Lawrence, Franklin, Clinton, and Essex counties all have average gas prices over $5.00. They added that Westchester County is reporting the highest average price per gallon outside of New York City, at $5.18. In Manhattan, the average price is up to $5.45.

To conserve fuel, AAA is advising drivers to abide by the following tips: Avoid peak traffic times, combine errands into one trip, make sure tire pressure is at the vehicle’s recommended level for the best gas mileage and removing unnecessary and bulky items from the car.
