BEIJING (77WABC) — There are unconfirmed rumors in China and among overseas Chinese media indicating Chinese president Xi Jinping will step down.

The reasoning is reportedly over COVID lockdowns in Shanghai and elsewhere. The rumors also followed a meeting of China’s leadership group last week, the Party Politburo Standing Committee.

The Washington Times reports that according to a YouTube video posted on May 4 by a Canadian-based blogger Lao Deng, a coup was launched against Xi at the meeting of senior party leaders in Beijing. The blogger cited a senior Chinese communist party Security source indicating Xi was forced to step aside but will stay in place until a major party meeting later this year.
