NEW YORK, NEW YORK -(77WABC)- As if violent crime in the subway isn’t bad enough—-now the MTA is going after fare beaters. The MTA is putting together a so-called “Fareness” panel to look into the problem. MTA Chairman Janno Lieber says this year alone, the agency is expected to lose $500 million dollars because of fare beaters.
The NYPD says assaults are up 33% percent from last year, and up more than 50% percent from last month. Stabbings and slashings are up a shocking 70% percent compared to last year.
