NEW YORK (77WABC) — A few dozen career criminals known to the NYPD are responsible for many thefts across the Upper East Side.
According to 19th Precinct commander Melissa Eger, 41 repeat offenders are responsible for 147 thefts across the upscale neighborhood. Major crimes in the 19th precinct — which is responsible for the area from East 59th Street to East 96th — are up 37 percent from last year.
In 2022, the precinct has recorded 402 grand larcenies — up 42 percent, 950 petit larcenies — up 52 percent, 57 robberies — up 46 percent, AND 35 car thefts — up 52 percent.
Police say two recidivists are the biggest offenders; 42-year-old shoplifter Michelle Mckelley has 96 prior shoplifting arrests and 39-year-old Jamel Pringle is another who has 167 arrests.
