NEW YORK, NEW YORK- (77-WABC)- Mayor Eric Adams wants to extend and make permanent the so-called Fair Fares program, which offers a 50 percent discount on both subway and bus fares. More than 260 thousand New Yorkers have enrolled in the program since it was introduced in January 2019.

The City Council is in agreement with the Mayor on the program.

The city is guaranteeing permanent funding of Fair Fares–committing 75 million dollars for New Yorkers who make less than the federal poverty level qualify for Fair Fares.

It comes as daily subway ridership continues to recover from the COVID-19 pandemic, with ridership passing the three-million mark for three days in a row last week.
