Go was Asian, but the incident is not being investigated as a hate crime. However attacks against Asians have increased since the viral pandemic began. Recent data from the NYPD shows an increase of 361% in hate crimes against the group.
61-year-old Simon Martial is charged with 2nd degree murder in connection with Go’s death. Martial’s family said the homeless man was schizophrenic and had been in and out of mental hospitals for 20 years.
Ironically, Go was reported to have been a volunteer advocate for the homeless.
