Alleged killer of 19 yr old Burger King cashier has extensive criminal background

winston-glynn

HARLEM, NY (77WABC) – Good old-fashioned police work led NYPD detectives to suspect believed to have shot to death 19-year-old Kristal Bayron-Nieves.  The suspect is 30-year old Winston Glynn.  Glynn has seven prior arrests, four of them violent incidents, all of them in New York City.  Most recently on November 30th, 2021 Glynn was arrested for menacing and assaulting a person with a knife at a homeless shelter. He was charged with a misdemeanor and released despite his violent background.

Police say Glynn worked at the same Burger King where the murder took place but never worked with Nieves.  Investigators say after demanding money from the register that fateful early Sunday morning, Glynn pistol-whipped the manager with the gun knocking out two teeth.  He then took about a hundred dollars from the register but demanded more.  As Nieves was struggling to get the register open, police say Glynn shot Nieves once in the torso.

James Essig Chief of Detectives said Nieves was trying to comply with the gunman’s demands.

“She was murdered for no apparent reason,” said Essig.

Although most of the suspect’s wardrobe at the time of the killing was non-descript and he was wearing a ski mask, Glynn was spotted wearing a distinctive “Guess” belt by detectives during an extensive canvass of surveillance video in the subway system.  Detectives were then able to match the belt to one he was wearing on a picture he posted on Instagram.  Glynn was also linked by an EBT card he used after the fatal shooting.  Cops said Glynn’s gait also matches that of the killer’s.

The suspect ran from the scene and hopped on a number 6 subway train, taking it from 116th St to 110th Street.  Cops say he then walked into a bodega off 110th Street, and instead of using the proceeds from the robbery, bought a fruit drink using his EBT card.

Detectives got his name from the card and tracked him to a Days Inn near Kennedy Airport in Queens, which is currently being used as a shelter, and continued to track his steps until they made the arrest.

Mayor Adams praised the work of the detectives.

“These detectives understood that K wasn’t just a number,” said Adams. “They operated in a professional manner and brought this killer to justice.”

Officers are still looking for the .9 millimeter handgun Glynn used in the shooting.
