VP Kamala Harris compares Jan. 6th Capitol riot to terror attacks where thousands died

WASHINGTON DC (77WABC) – To mark the anniversary of the January 6th riot at the Capitol, Vice President Kamala Harris stated that the date will live on in the country’s memory, likening it to the dates of the Pearl Harbor attack and the 9/11 terror attacks.

In a somber tone, Harris said, “Certain dates echo throughout history.” She added, “Including dates that instantly remind all who have lived them where they were and what they were doing when our democracy came under assault. Dates that occupy not only a place on our calendar but a place in our collective memory. Dec. 7, 1941, Sept. 11, 2001, and Jan. 6, 2021.”

Harris, who was vice president-elect and a sitting senator at the time, said Thursday that the rioters that day sought to attack “the institutions, the values, the ideals that generations of Americans have marched, picketed, and shed blood to establish and defend.”

Her comments were met with quick criticism from those who said the violent riot at the federal building last year was not comparable to attacks that resulted in the deaths of thousands of Americans.

The White House, however, defended her remarks Thursday afternoon.  White House press secretary Jen Psaki said during a press briefing that critics who are seizing on Harris’ comparison were deflecting from the real issue of January 6. She suggested those people angry with Harris should instead be “a part of solving the threats” to democracy.
