The NYPD May Be Getting its First Female Police Commissioner

NY, NY (77WABC)-History in the making. NYC may wind up with its first ever female Police Commissioner.

NYC Mayor Elect Eric Adams (D) is today expected to announce that he has chosen Keechant Sewell as his pick to replace outgoing NYPD Commissioner Dermot Shea.

Shea is stepping down at the end of NYC Mayor Bill De Blasio’s administration on Dec. 31st, 2021.

Sewell, 49-years-old, is currently the Chief of Detectives for the Nassau County Police Department.

Both Adams and Sewell are African American.

Also retiring from the NYPD at the end of the year is First Deputy Commissioner, Benjamin Tucker.
