BRUSSELS (AP) —On Tuesday, CDC Director Dr. Rochelle Walensky on the “Today” Show said Omicron is spreading faster in the New York and New Jersey region than elsewhere in the US, 13% compared to 3%. She stressed that medical personnel now have the tools to fight the Covid-19 variant.
The CDC Director said on average 120,000 new cases are appearing daily, with the majority of those cases still being detected as the Delta variant.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen says that omicron is expected to be the dominant coronavirus variant in the 27-nation bloc by mid-January.
The head of the EU’s executive branch said Wednesday that the bloc is well prepared to fight omicron with 66.6% of the European population now fully vaccinated against the virus. Von der Leyen said she is confident the EU has the “strength” and “means” to overcome the disease although expressing her sadness that once again “Christmas will be overshadowed by the pandemic.” She spoke as an alarming rise of contagion has prompted the implementations of further restrictions across Europe.
