NEW YORK (77 WABC) – Staten Island Borough President elect Vito Fossella is threatening to take New York City to court over a proposed bill, which would allow non citizens to vote in elections.
According to the New York Post, it would allow non-citizens to vote in local elections if they’re green-card holders or authorized to work in the country.
Voting requirements are set in the New York state constitution.
Fossella, appearing on Monday’s Cats At Night Show on 77 WABC, says, “If the citizens of the state want to do this, there is a process, you would have state lawmakers amend the constitution.”
If the bill passes, it would affect about 800 hundred thousand people.
The measure is sponsored by Democratic city councilman Ydanis Rodriguez.
Federal and state elections are not covered under the bill.
