WASHINGTON DC (77WABC) – Amid the news of a large pay-out to illegal immigrants, four Senate Republicans are set to introduce legislation that would bar any payment to illegal immigrants separated under the Trump administration.
Fox News reports that Republican Leader Mitch McConnell, as well as Senators Thom Tillis, Tom Cotton, and John Cornyn are set to introduce a bill on Thursday titled the Protect “American Taxpayer Dollars from Illegal Immigration Act.”
“Notwithstanding any other provision of law,” the bill reads, “no Federal funds, including amounts deposited into the Judgment Fund established under section 1304 of title 31, United States Code, may be expended for any legal settlement to any individual who violated section 275(a) of the Immigration and Nationality Act (8 U.S.C. 1325(a)) if the claims giving rise to such settlement are based on the lawful detention of such individual as part of a family unit after entry at a port of entry or between ports of entry along the southern border of the United States after January 20, 2017.”
According to Fox News, twenty-one Republican senators have already co-sponsored the bill.
The decision to introduce legislation comes after it was revealed that the Biden administration was planning to pay illegal immigrants a staggering $450,000 per person.
President Biden dismissed those claims calling them “garbage” at first. Then just 24 hours later, the President clarified the “garbage” comment by saying, “The number [$450,000] is what I was referring to.” Biden also said during that same press conference, “If in fact, because of the outrageous behavior of the last administration, you were coming across the border, whether it was legal or illegal, and you lost your child … you deserve some kind of compensation, no matter what the circumstance.”
“What that will be, I have no idea,” Biden added.
