A 2-Year-Old Pedestrian Killed, Her Mother Seriously Hurt in Patchogue

Patchogue, NY (77WABC)-A 2-year-old toddler is dead, her mother seriously hurt after they were struck by a pick up truck on Medford Avenue in Patchogue Monday night.

Suffolk County Police Fifth Squad detectives are investigating Monday night’s fatal crash which happened in front of 192 Medford Avenue at approximately 6:18 pm.

Police say the toddler’s mother, 21-year-old Vilma Graciela Maurad Centeno was pushing her 2-year-old daughter Nataly Brito Maurad  in a stroller westbound across Medford Avenue.  Police say the mother and her child were struck by a northbound 2005 Ford pickup.

Centeno and her daughter were taken to Long Island Community Hospital in East Patchogue, where the 2-year-old was pronounced dead.  Centeno of Patchogue was transferred to Stony Brook University Hospital for treatment of serious injuries.

Police say the driver of the pick up truck, 62-year-old  James Maupin Jr., of Holtsville, NY, was not hurt.

The Ford was impounded for a safety check. Detectives are asking anyone with information on the crash to call the Fifth Squad at 631-854-8552.
