NYC Passes Bills To Help Food Delivery App Workers

syndication-the-columbus-dispatch

New York, NY (77 WABC) – City Council has passed a vote this afternoon on bills that will provide delivery workers for apps like Uber Eats and DoorDash with new protections and benefits.

The new benefits would include access to bathrooms, a maximum delivery distance, prohibiting travel through tunnels or bridges, a minimum fee for delivery and certify that tips would go to delivery workers.

The City was sued earlier this month by Uber Eats, DoorDash and Grubhub over a bill that looked to place a cap on delivery fees charged by the apps. The new approved proposals have the support of both GrubHub and Doordash.

Grant Klinzman, a spokesperson for GrubHub, said in a statement to the New York Times that GrubHub intends on doing right by it’s employees that have worked so hard during the trying times of the pandemic, “These bills are common-sense steps to support the delivery workers who work hard every day for New York’s restaurants and residents,” said Klinzman, “Making sure they get a living wage and have access to a toilet isn’t just a good idea, it’s the right thing to do.”

When asked on the importance of this legislation, Mayor de Blasio says he looks forward to helping out the workers of his city, “This legislation is important. Delivery workers have gone through so much in this crisis. All working people have and anything we can do to lighten the burden to make their lives a little easier to help them recover, we want to do, I know the City Council feels that strongly. We’ve been working together on this legislation, and I look forward to supporting it,” said de Blasio.

The Department of Consumer and Worker Protection will now work to conduct a study to determine the appropriate minimum fee for a trip by a delivery worker.
