MOAB, UT (77WABC) – The city of Moab, Utah is investigating its police department’s handling of a fight between Gabby Petito and Brian Laundrie several weeks before Petito was killed. The police responded to the dispute after receiving a 911 call from a man who witnessed Laundrie slap Petito several times.
Moab city officials released the following statement:
“The Moab City Police Department has clear standards for officer conduct during a possible domestic dispute and our officers are trained to follow those standards and protocol,” the city said. “At this time, the City of Moab is unaware of any breach of Police Department policy during this incident. However, the City will conduct a formal investigation and, based on the results, will take any next steps that may be appropriate.”
The August 12th bodycam footage showed police speaking with the couple and telling both to separate for the night. In the video, Petito is seen apologizing, and Laundrie had several scratches on his face. Responding Moab police officers then determined that Petito was the aggressor in the incident, which contradicted what the 911 caller had reported.
Petito’s mother reported her missing on September 11th. The FBI located her body in Wyoming on September 19th. Laundrie is still missing and the search for him continues.
