Federal Priasons Transgender Inmates
(AP)-The US Justice Department official told the The Associated Press that the department is reviewing its policies on housing transgender inmates in the federal prison system.
The federal Bureau of Prisons’ policies for transgender inmates are in the spotlight after a leader of an Illinois antigovernmental militia group who identifies as transgender was sentenced this week to 53 years in prison for masterminding the 2017 bombing of a Minnesota mosque. Emily Claire Hari, was charged tried and convicted under the name Michael Hari. She recently said she is transgender.
Hari was expected to receive a mandatory minimum of 30 years in prison in connection with the attack on Dar-al-Farooq Islamic Center in Bloomington in 2017. No one was hurt.
Defense attorneys asked for the minimum, but prosecutors sought life, saying Hari hasn’t taken responsibility for the attack.
It’s now up to a bureau council of psychology and correctional officials to decide where to house the militia group leader. There are 122 federal prisons in the US.
Protections for transgender prisoners were rolled back in the Trump administration.
