During the 9/11 attack on the World Trade Center 20 years ago, St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church was completely destroyed. Despite a lengthy recovery operation that lasted for months after the attack, only a few precious relics of the church were found.
St. Nicholas is currently in the process of being rebuilt and is expected to be completed in 2022. In remembrance of 9/11, the church held a Celebration of Light ceremony with the support of John Catsimatidis and 77 WABC to honor all the lives lost 20 years ago.
Once reopened, the church plans to continue serving the Greek Orthodox community but has created a space inside for prayer and meditation by people of different faiths. The newly built church will overlook the 9/11 memorial and will also open as a national shrine.
