A Centereach Man Charged with DWI Following a Fatal Crash; One Dead One Critical

Sayville, NY (77WABC)-A Centereach man is charged with Driving While Intoxicated after allegedly plowing into a disabled 2011 Toyota Yaris killing its driver and critically injuring a woman who’d stepped outside of the Toyota.

Police say Daniel Lazaro of 4 Thornridge Lane was behind the wheel of a 2011 Jeep Liberty when he hit the Toyota near Exit 50 Eastbound on Sunrise Highway early this morning.

The driver of the Toyota was traveling eastbound on Sunrise Highway, near Exit 50, when the vehicle struck the center median, followed by the guardrail of the right lane, before becoming disabled sideways, facing north, in the center lane at approximately 12:25 a.m. An adult female passenger exited the Toyota, which was then struck in the driver’s side by an eastbound 2011 Jeep Liberty. The impact of the crash caused the Toyota to strike the female.

According to police, the driver of the Toyota was pronounced dead at the scene by a physician assistant from the Office of the Suffolk County Medical Examiner. The female passenger was airlifted by Suffolk County Police helicopter to Stony Brook University Hospital in critical condition. Neither victim has yet to be identified by police. Lazzaro, was transported to Long Island Community Hospital in East Patchogue for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.

Lazzaro was charged with DWI by detectives from the Major Case Unit. He will be arraigned at a later date.

Detectives are asking anyone with information on the crash to call the Major Case Unit at 631-852-6553.
