NY: NYC Mayor Visits Bronx Middle Schools On Reopening Day
NEW YORK (77WABC) — New York City’s Department of Education has allocated $350 million in federal funding to combat educational damage wrought by the coronavirus pandemic, according to the New York Post.
According to a budgeting memo issued last week, the money will support a range of initiatives from literacy programs to new arts offerings. Every school will receive a minimum of $75,000 and a maximum of $600,000 after the pandemic upended consecutive school years.
The DOE is also is shelling out at least $12 million to pay for extra teachers to help maintain social-distancing protocols this school year. More than 100 schools requested extra teachers to staff additional classes made necessary by the coronavirus safeguard, according to the DOE memo.
“This allocation [of funds] is based on staffing needs requested by principals and confirmed by the Borough/Citywide Office,” the document says.
The money is coming from the federal American Rescue Plan Act that assists with coronavirus-related spending.
