Gov. Hochul: “We Will Do Everything in Our Power”

NEW YORK (77WABC) — Governor Kathy Hochul stood with Mayor Bill de Blasio, Senator Chuck Schumer and other city leaders in Queens Thursday morning, to address the devastation left in New York City after Tropical Storm Ida tore through the northeast Wednesday night into early Thursday.

In the address to the public, the city and state leaders stressed that Ida’s havoc was due largely in part to crumbling infrastructure and climate change.

“Before we worried about the coastal areas; now it’s about what’s happening in the streets, the drainage systems that need to be enhanced, and all the resilience it can bed because of climate change,” Hochul said. “Unfortunately this is something we’re going to have to deal with — with great regularity — and we want to ensure New Yorkers that  we’re prepared for this and we’ll do everything we can in our power to protect human life and property.”

The leaders vowed cooperation to address the immediate impact of the storm that brought record rainfall to the region and to make long overdue investments in preparation for future devastation.

“When you get two record rainfalls in a week it’s not just coincidence,” Schumer said.  “When you get all the changes we’ve seen in weather, that’s not a coincidence. Global warming is upon us and it’s going to get worse, and worse, and worse, unless we do something about it.”

At least 22 deaths have been linked to flooding from Maryland to New York from Ida. So far the NYPD has reported nine deaths.
