New York (77WABC) — The NYPD’s Hate Crime Task Force is investigating an incident in which a 63-year-old Asian female was punched in her face and shoved to the ground Sunday in Midtown. Police say a man engaged the woman in a verbal confrontation in front of 230 West 54th Street before physically assaulting her as he made Anti-Asian statements Sunday evening.

According to police, the woman suffered back pain but refused medical attention at the scene. The suspect in connection with the random attack fled southbound on Broadway on a bicycle.

According to the NYPD’s Hate Crimes Dashboard, there have been 102 Asian Hate Crimes reported in NYC’s five boroughs with 38 arrests since Jan. 1st, 2021 until the end of June. Hate Crimes targeting Asian Americans have increased due to COVID-19 believed to have originated in China.
