When Alex Smith suffered a compound fracture to his tibia and fibula in his right leg, everyone considered it a career-ending injury.

When Alex Smith had to have 17 surgeries after complications to his initial surgery that almost forced the doctors to amputate his leg, it was doubtful he would even walk again, let alone play in an NFL game.

When Alex Smith stepped onto a football field in 2020, it was clear that he would be named the NFL Comeback Player of the Year. He played in eight games in his comeback season.

When asked why he came back after suffering such an injury, he replied, “Because I can.”

When he retired in April 2021, he said that he would be interested in joining the media.

That’s exactly what he’s now doing. Andrew Marchand of The New York Post broke the news that Alex Smith would be joining ESPN as an NFL analyst for the upcoming season.

Smith won’t be taking a full-time role just yet, but it’s possible that this part-time offer could lead to something more in the future. He will appear on Monday Night NFL Countdown, and, according to Marchand, he will be used “across ESPN shows.”
