A Long Island Man Charged with Stealing the Identity of Three Assisted Living Residents

Suffolk County, NY (77WABC)-Suffolk County police say three senior citizens, residents of the Atria Bay Shore, an assisted living facility located at 53 Ocean Avenue in Bat Shore, NY, were victims of identity theft. Police say it is unclear how Darrel Sharpeson of Brentwood allegedly obtained their personal information and that an investigation is ongoing which includes the possibility of more victims.

Detectives from the Suffolk County Police Departments Financial Crimes Unit allege Sharpeson went to Apple store locations in multiple states. He allegedly used personal information from three residents of Atria Bay Shore to complete loan applications and purchase Apple iPhones in their names. The first case was reported to Suffolk County Police in October of 2019.

 Police say the 37-year-old Sharpeson, of  127 Westwood Drive, was arrested Monday afternoon by Suffolk County Police. He is charged with three counts of Identity Theft 1st Degree and six counts of Identity Theft 2nd Degree. He was held overnight at the Third Precinct. He is scheduled to be arraigned at First District Court in Central Islip today.

Investigators say the investigation continues and that there may be more alleged victims in the case. Police say nyone who believes they may be a victim of Sharpeson is asked to contact the Financial Crimes Unit at 631-852-6120 or the non-emergency police phone number, 631-852-COPS (2677).
