A Boat Operator Charged with Boating While Intoxicated A Passenger Missing

Sayville, Long Island (77WABC)-A tragic boating accident in the Great South Bay during the early morning hours of July 5th. Suffolk County Police say a passenger aboard a 2003 parker center console boat was tossed overboard and remains missing after the operator of the vessel slammed into a jetty.

Police say the driver of the 2003 Parker, 25-year old Jack Benjamin of Farmingdale was charged with BWI, boating while intoxicated, following the crash near the end of Browns River Road at 1:23 in the morning.

 The missing  25-year-old male passenger  was not wearing a life jacket, according to County Police. Personnel from multiple fire departments and the United States Coast Guard conducted a search for the man. Marine Bureau officers are continuing to search. Police say the boat was impounded.

Benjamin and a female passenger were transported to South Shore University Hospital in Bay Shore where they were treated and released. Three other passengers were not injured.

Benjamin of 1021 Old Medford Ave. was held at the Fifth Precinct awaiting arraignment scheduled for today at First District Court in Central Islip.
