Two Stabbings Following Pride Events Being Investigated by the NYPD as Possible Hate Crimes

New York, NY (77WABC) Two stabbings are under investigation by the NYPD as possible hate crimes following Pride Event celebrations in NYC over the weekend.

It was 3:30 in the morning Monday when a 29-year-old man on board a northbound ‘2’ train had anti-gay statements shouted at him and others aboard the train. A verbal argument between the 29-year-old and the man shouting anti-gay statements ensued with the alternation turning physical.

When the train stopped at West 34 Street and 7 Avenue the physical altercation spilled onto the northbound platform. The 29-year-old was stabbed with an unknown object. His attacker fled the station. The 29-year-old re-boarded the northbound ‘2″ train and realizing he’d been stabbed in the left side of his chest and torso.  He was taken by private means to Mount Sinai West Hospital for treatment of his non-life-threatening injuries.

The NYPD Hate Crimes Task Force is investigating the incident.

The suspect wanted in connection with the attack can be seen in the attached photo. Police say the man has a dark complexion, is approximately 5’11” in height, weighing 185 pounds, with a medium build and partial facial hair. He was last seen wearing a red Chicago Bulls basketball hat, a gold chain around his neck, a black shirt, green cargo shorts, and multi-colored sneakers.

Police say all calls are strictly confidential.

On Sunday night, around 8:45 p.m.,  people heading home from pride events intervened when they saw a 20-year-old woman being harassed at the George Ferry Terminal on Staten Island. A 20-year-old man was stabbed in his shoulder and also called the “f” word during the confrontation.

Police say 47-year-old Eric Shields of Norfolk, Virginia was arrested and charged with assault, weapons possession, menacing, and harassment.
