Wash. DC (77WABC/AP)- A vote is expected later this week after House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Ca.) announced the creation of a proposed new House committee to investigate the Jan. 6 insurrection at the U.S. Capitol.   The committee would have 13 members and the power to subpoena witnesses according to legislation released by Pelosi.

Pelosi’s announcement comes after Senate Republicans blocked the formation of an independent, bipartisan commission to probe the attack.

The partisan House committee would have eight members appointed by Pelosi and five appointed “after consultation with” Republican Leader Kevin McCarthy.

The violent insurrection occurred on Wednesday, January 6, 2021. The U.S. Capitol in Washington, DC was stormed during a riot and violent attack by a mob of supporters of President Donald Trump attempting to overturn his defeat in the 2020 Presidential election.

The deadly attack occurred during a joint session of Congress assembled to count electoral votes to formalize President-Elect Joe Biden’s win.

Five people died either shortly before, during, or after the event. One was shot by Capitol Police, one died of a drug overdose and three succumbed to natural causes. More than 140 people were hurt.
