
George Floyd Officer Trial
New York (77WABC) – Former Minneapolis police Officer Derek Chauvin has been sentenced to 22 1/2 years in prison for the murder of George Floyd. The punishment handed out Friday fell short of the 30 years that prosecutors requested.

The judge cited the reasoning behind the sentencing as an “abuse of a position of trust and authority and also the particular cruelty” against Floyd.
Chauvin spoke briefly because of what he called “some additional legal matters at hand”, a possible reference to his upcoming federal civil rights trial.
Chauvin could be paroled after serving two-thirds, or 15 years of his sentence.
