Washington, DC (77WABC)-Captain “Sully” Sullenberger, who successfully landed a plane on the Hudson River in January 2009 in what became known as the “Miracle on the Hudson” has been nominated by Pres. Joe Biden to an aviation post.
The 70-year-old Sullenberger has been nominated as the U.S. representative to the Council of the International Civil Aviation Organization, the White House announced Tuesday afternoon. Sullenberger supported Biden on the campaign trail.
On January 15, 2009, US Airways Flight 1549, an Airbus A320 was en route from New York City’s LaGuardia Airpor to Charlotte, North Carolina, when it struck a flock of birds shortly after take-off causing all engines to lose power. Unable to reach any airport for an emergency landing, pilots Chesley Sullenberger and Jeffrey Skiles glided the plane to a ditch landing on the Hudson River on the West side of Manhattan.
There were no fatalities, although a few serious injuries occurred. Sullenberger announced his retirement on March 3rd, 2010 in North Carolina.
