PEPPERONIDEBLASIO
New York, NY (77WABC)-Pepperoni came out on top among pizza topping choices in NYC’s mock ranked-choice voting contest on the NYC.gov website to help educate New Yorkers about ranked-choice voting. The system is being used for the first time this year in the upcoming NYC Mayoral Primary on June 22nd.
NYC Mayor DeBlasio said during his morning briefing that 20,000 New Yorkers took part in the contest ranking up to five choices from Pineapple, Sausage, Green peppers, Vegan cheese, Clams, Mushrooms, Olives, and Pepperoni.
Pepperoni received 45% of the vote or 8,767 votes. Similar to real ranked choice-voting toppings receiving the fewest amount of votes were eliminated with those votes going to the higher vote-getters. Pepperoni surpassed the 50% vote total as the choices at the bottom were eliminated one by one becoming the winner.
Sausage came in second with 3,094 votes, Pineapple came in third with 2,648 votes. Fourth place went to mushrooms, followed in fifth place by olives. Trailing behind the top five choices were green peppers, vegan cheese, and in last place clams.

The Mayor says the pizza topping poll is closed but it can be viewed here to allow New Yorkers to practice the ranked-choice voting system.
Early voting, underway since Saturday, closes this Sunday at 4 pm ahead of the June 22nd mayoral primary.
Ranked-choice voting allows voters to rank up to five candidates on the ballot in order of preference. In turn, candidates with the lowest vote totals in multiple rounds will be eliminated and voters’ support will be given to their next-choice candidates until one candidate receives more than fifty percent of the vote.
