New York, NY (77WABC)-Circle July 7th on your calendar.  NYC Mayor Bill DeBlasio says that day will honor Essential Workers with a ticker-tape parade along NYC’s Canyon of Heroes. The Mayor said while being mindful of the loss and suffering families who lost loved ones are still going thru,  “we need a day to celebrate the heroism of everyday New Yorkers .” The Mayor announced, “Wednesday, July 7th  in the Canyon of Heroes will be that moment a parade you’ll remember for the rest of your life.”

The Mayor said the parade will feature floats with health care workers, first responders, educators, municipal workers, transportation workers, grocery and bodega workers, delivery people, you name it all the Essential Workers who made it happen, everyone who kept it together in NYC for all of us and brought us back,” from the viral pandemic. The Mayor added, “its a day to celebrate and appreciate the heroes who often go unsung, we’re gonna sing about ’em this day.”

Throughout the Covid 19 crisis, Mayor DeBalsio repeatedly promised a ticker-tape parade to honor Essential Workers.

The last ticker-tape parade in NYC’s Canyon of Heroes was held in July 2019 honoring the U.S. women’s soccer team for its  FIFA World Cup win. It was the first time a ticker-tape parade honored an all-female athletics team; the women’s team wasn’t recognized when it won the same championship in 1999 and 2003.

NYC’s Canyon of Heroes is the name for the over 200 black granite plaques that commemorate and list every single ticker-tape parade in New York City history. The plaques are embedded in the sidewalks along Broadway in Lower Manhattan. They run on both sides of the street, from the beginning of Broadway at Battery Place, all the way north to Chambers Street, right next to City Hall.

Each plaque is placed within about 20-25 feet of the other, with some variations. Every single one lists the date of the parade and the event being celebrated.

According to the  Baruch College website, NYC Data, the first-ever ticker-tape parade in NYC was held on October 29, 1886. It marked the dedication of the Statue of Liberty. In 1899, two million people turned out for Admiral George Dewey, hero of the battle of Manila Bay, who became the first individual honored with a ticker-tape parade. President Teddy Roosevelt got one in 1910 upon his return from an African safari.

The Mayor’s announcement about the parade comes as NYC’s Covid 19 rate on a seven-day rolling average is 0.59%, the lowest rate since the start of the viral pandemic.
